History of Trewan Hall

So far we have found little more than references to 'Trewan' in various documents and histories. It seems the larger part of the building as it now exists was built in 1633 on the site of an earlier building, using some of the earlier masonry. The work was carried out by John Vivian and the estate remained in his family for nearly 300 years.

Old print of Trewan Hall Around 1840 considerable restoration work was undertaken and we believe much of the garden landscaping, still discernible, was laid out at about the same time.

The Hall was unoccupied at the start of the Second World War and was in a very dilapidated state. The Air Ministry requisitioned the property and it became the quarters for nearly 300 men, supplemented by huts in the grounds.

After the war, the property changed hands once or twice and was sold to the present owners in 1961. The company 'Trewan Hall Ltd' was formed in the same year with the original intention of restoring the property. The income from flats and dwellings, as they were gradually completed, enabled this aim to progress. Meanwhile the potential of the estate had become clear and several other enterprises were started. The most significant of these has been the establishment of the camping site, which we hope will continue to flourish and become a particular pleasure for members to visit.
